Common recruitment method

Go to Luminous and start the Shadow Magic quest; you should be taken to Omble. In the first screen, you should be able to find the Shadow of Silence. Talk to his shadow and ask him to help. When you finally get out of Omble, you should be able to find Silence in the room where you buy Shadow Magic, in the upper right corner; talk to him and he will join you.

Character Analysis

By Skankin' Garbage: Silence is a strange phenomenon - terrible on paper, but strangely useful overall. Admittedly, he doesn't have a lot going for him: For starters, he has the second-lowest base stats of any Mystic in the game, beating Mesarthim by a whopping four points. Mesarthim at least has other balancing factors which make her more useful. Silence's Mystic Armor is the most common variety (MysticMail), and his base INT and WIL are very low for a Mystic - a heavy blow, considering how important those two stats are for Mystics. He also seems to gain WP and JP very slow until later into a quest. The only good thing Silence has going for him on paper is that he's got the second-highest base VIT stat of any Mystic in the game. Overall, though, he's probably the 'worst' Mystic in the game.

However, Silence is strangely not without merit. This is for two reasons:

1. No Mystic in the game has such low stats that they're uncontestably bad

2. Silence is the easiest Mystic in the whole game to recruit. Seriously. Complete the Shadow Magic quest and he's yours. Unless you specifically want a Mystic with Shadow Magic, Silence is an excellent character to grab early - and in some cases, the only easy way to recruit a Mystic into the party at all (Red, Lute). In my opinion, being able to recruit someone quickly and painlessly is one of the biggest pluses in choosing a character.

Still, there's no denying that you can really find a better character. If you absolutely HAVE to have a Mystic in Red's or Lute's scenario, and you don't like doing the Magic quests for no reason (Cos I sure as hell don't), then Silence is a worthwhile pick.

If you do use Silence, I recommend focusing on physical attacks and magic, with a Genbu/Suzaku/Suzaku setup. This will give him access to GriffithScratch while still giving him +60 to INT and VIT. The build favors Magic, of course, but GriffithScratch gives him slightly better ability in forming combination attacks.
